ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE
The Department APPLIED
MECHANICS of the Galati University "Dunarea de Jos" was
established in 1952 and started its activities in the structure
of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty until present date. The
specific area operates as an academic and research unit with
the following objectives:
o The training of the students from university's faculties in
the fields: Mechanics, Mechanical Vibrations, Elasticity and
Plasticity, Strength of Materials, Marine
Technology, Naval Structures.
o The scientifically management of MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
specialization
o Support of undergraduate and postgraduate - Master and Ph.D.
studies in the Department of Mechanics and Strength of
Materials to promote the education of young scientists.
o The conduction of original studies and projects in the fields
of Mechanical Engineering.
o The provision of services to industry, public institutions and
organizations on technical and scientific matters on the fields
of specialization of the Department.
The personnel of the
Department consist of Member of Staff of the Department of
APPLIED MECHANICS, Ph.D. Candidates.
The Areas of Department
are:
1. Mechanics and Mechanical
Vibrations
2. Strength of Materials
3. Marine Engineering
INFRASTRUCTURE
The Department of APPLIED
MECHANICS holds a long-standing experience in training,
research, design, development and simulation of mechanical
processes and systems. The infrastructure to support the above
activities consists of:
o Lecturer rooms: 2 (with 14 computers for each room)
o Laboratories: Numerical Mechanics, Mechanical Vibrations, and
Strength of Materials
o Software
o Internet server (on-line services).
ACTIVITY AREAS
The Department of APPLIED
MECHANICS is a structural part of the Mechanical Engineering
Faculty. In parallel to undergraduate studies (four years
duration) there is a very active Master and Ph.D. program,
which covers almost all the fields of Mechanical Engineering
Marine Engineering. In general, during the last 10 years, the
Department had very significant contributions to relative
Romanian Projects and European Union Projects.
FIELDS OF SCIENTIFICALLY
INTEREST
Marine Environment: This is
a relatively new research group, under coordination of Prof.
Eugen Rusu, whose activity is focused on the study of wave
climate and of the nearshore wave impact. Some research
directions are: Simulations with wave models for any scale
(generation, transformation and local, including the models
WW3, SWAN, STWAVE, REF/DIF). Analysis of 'in situ' measurements
and remotely sensed data, comparisons with model results, model
calibrations. Implementation of inverse modeling techniques and
of data assimilation schemes associated with the wave models.
Wave induced currents and
wave-current interactions. Methods to estimate the Stokes drift
and the influence of the molecular viscosity at the surface
boundary layer when this is contaminated by an inextensible
slick. Estimation of the nearshore wave induced currents using
the model SHORECIRC. Phenomena and processes associated with
the surf-zone.
Wave anomalies, freak waves
and storm waves. Focusing of wave energy and constructive
interferences. Changes and tendencies in the wave climate,
evaluations and projections concerning the medium to long-term
wave climate.
Offshore and ship
structures. Prof. Ionel Chirica and his scientific team have
carried out a systematic effort to develop skills and know-how
in the offshore and ship structures design and evaluation of
recorded problems of the Romanian requirements.
In the last 10 years the
most significant corresponding projects that were undertaken by
"Offshore and ship structures" Research Group are:
- Strength analysis of the
ships with large open decks
- Ultimate strength analysis
of the large ship structures
- Strain gauge measurements
of the ship systems in exploitation (naval shafts, rigging,
ship structures).
Marine Technology
The "Marine Technology"
Research Group was established in 1984 and started its
activities in the structure of the Mechanics and Strength of
Materials Department until present date. The research
group-Prof. Matulea, Assoc. Prof. I. Strat, Assoc. Prof. N.
Talmaciu, Assoc. Prof. V. Popa, Assoc. Prof. I. Gavrilescu,
Assoc. Prof. D. Boazu- has carried out a systematic effort to
develop skills and know-how in the design and evaluation of
recorded problems of the Romanian offshore operations. The
specific Area operates as an academic and research unit with
the following objectives:
o The training of the
students from university's faculties in the field of Offshore
Technology
o Support of undergraduate
and postgraduate - Ph.D. studies in the Department of Mechanics
and Strength of Materials to promote the education of young scientists;
o The conduction of original
studies and projects in the fields:
o Of Hydrocarbon transfer
systems (mathematical modeling and software for pipeline,
risers, cost-benefit & safety analysis),
o Of Underwater vehicles
(mathematical modeling and software, acoustic detection, marine
environment protection, pollution),
o Of Marine safety (risk and
accident analysis, naval accidents, oil spill incidents,
databases, support decision tools, regulations) and
o The provision of services
to industry, public institutions and organizations on technical
and scientific matters on the fields of specialization of this
Area. The personnel of the "Marine Technology" Research Group
of University "Dunarea de Jos" of Galati consist of Member of
Staff of the Department of Mechanics and Strength of Materials,
Ph.D. candidates.
